A bit about us…

In 1996, many GPs from across Devon came together to form Devon Doctors on Call, a business which would organise their out of hours responsibility and share the out of hours sessions among colleagues from the local area. This evolved into eight co-operatives across Devon, each with its own Committee and Medical Director.

On 1st October 2004 the Primary Care Trusts (of which there are 8 in Devon) took over responsibility from GPs for out of hours care and pay for this service. Devon Doctors provides the service on behalf of the Devon Primary Care Trusts.

Following these changes, many local GPs continue to undertake out of hours work for us, indeed Devon Doctors gives preference to local GPs in filling shifts.

Although we are not an NHS Trust, we are very much part of the NHS family. Devon Doctors Ltd is a not-for-profit company and is owned by the GP practices of Devon.

Devon Doctors covers the whole of Devon and deals with an average of 30,000 patient calls each month.

The Department of Health require all out of hours services to meet the quality requirements. A monthly report on our performance against these requirements is submitted to the PCTs. Nationally Devon Doctors has an excellent reputation as an out of hours provider and we continue to work to meet and improve on our high standards, and the expectations of people in Devon.
